International Yoga Day 2017-18

Yoga is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India. The origins of yoga date back to pre – Vedic age.Yoga is more than physical exercise; it has a meditative and spiritual core.One of the ancient sages of India- Maharshi Patanjali advocated yoga and compiled yoga sutras in ‘A Text on Yoga Theory and Practice’. This book is considered to be the foundation of classical yoga. It is effective as a complementary intervention for cancer, schizophrenia, asthma and heart disease.
On December 1, 2016, Yoga was listed by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. From then onwards, YOGA is being celebrated as International yoga day on June 21 st every year. The reason for selection of this particular day is that it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Vidyaniketan Public School has sincerely been celebrating the invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition.
This year too, on 21 st June 2017 (Wednesday), we celebrated the International Yoga Day in the serene premises of our school.The school principal – Mr.Vijai Krishna Rajagopal inaugurated the proceedings by lighting the lamp. Sir talked to the students about yoga while emphasizing the need for it. Later our yoga instructor Mr.Muralidhar also spoke about its
importance. Under the direction of the school yoga instructors Mr.Muralidhar, Mr.Nagaraj and Ms.Janaki, a massive yoga demonstration was conducted by 200 students that included NCC cadets, the school hostellers, and a few other students.Ranging from Suryanamaskar, the students performed a variety of Asanas live on the campus, thus educating others about it.Overall, the program was an instant hit and it is expected to continue to be one in the years to come.
